BOOK DESCRIPTION
TARA MOVES TO THE AMERICAN SOUTH three years after her arranged marriage to tech executive Sanjay. Ignored and lonely, Tara finds herself reliving childhood memories that scarred her for life. When she was eight, her parents moved to Dubai to make a new life for the family, taking her baby brother along with them—but leaving Tara behind in Mangalore with her aging grandparents and a schizophrenic uncle.

Tara's memories of abandonment and isolation mirror her present life of loneliness and escalating abuse at the hands of her husband until, in a moment of truth, she discovers the importance of self-worth—a revelation that gives her the courage to break free, even at the risk of being shunned by her community.

After leaving Sanjay, Tara gently rebuilds her life and even marries her childhood love, Cyrus—and her life with him is beautiful, until old fears come knocking. Ultimately, Tara must face these fears, both to save her marriage and to confront the victim-shaming society she was raised within.

Touching on themes of abandonment, victimization, and tradition.

🪷Purple Lotus by Veena Rao is a quietly powerful novel that examines identity, displacement, and a woman’s journey toward self-reclamation. 🪷Through the character of Tara, Rao crafts a narrative that is both intimate in emotion and expansive in cultural insight. 🪷The story moves between Tara’s childhood in Mangalore and her married life in the American South, using these contrasting landscapes to highlight the weight of expectation and the persistence of unhealed wounds. 🪷The writing is measured and graceful, capturing both the weight of trauma and the quiet courage of healing. 🪷I would recommend this book only to readers 17+ 🪷A thoughtful and elegantly crafted story, Purple Lotus resonates for its honesty, nuance, and steady, understated strength. ... The Purple Lotus is a quiet, deeply felt novel about a woman reclaiming her voice after years of emotional abandonment. Veena Rao writes with a softness that still cuts — exploring marriage, loneliness, migration, and the ache of not being seen. Tara’s journey from silence to selfhood feels gentle yet powerful, like watching someone remember their own name. The storytelling is intimate, rooted in everyday details, and the emotional shift is gradual but real. This is a book for anyone who has ever stayed too long in spaces where they felt invisible — and finally chose themselves. ... Read More

There are some books which hit right left and center with emotional feels as soon as you pick them up like this one, or there are some which slowly build on as you keep reading. I tend to prefer reading the latter as former can get triggering for me, as I am a sensitive reader, but some parts of me wanted to challenge myself after my recent reads, and blurb was kinda pulling me in too, that I strengthened my resolve to read it. The book follows Tara, the main protagonist moving to America 3 years post marriage to live with her husband Sanjay, what follows after is a tangible mixed bouquet of emotions tying in with her past moving along a fluid before and after timelines to really get down to what Tara feels and thinks as she goes through every experience hereafter. I won't go into much detail as this book needs to be experienced by the reader, but I will say this every woman should read this, not just for the unilateral marriage narrative described in the blurb but to truly feel and start making a step forward removing themselves from society's expectations as women can really be whoever they want to be, if only they can not get bound by dogma's of what they are supposed to be. For me personally, I felt like this book helped me get over some wounds left over by past experiences. Yes, this book is triggering, a fair warning, but also empowering enough to heal and let go of the past to move forward for a better and happier future, as its best to clean out old wounds so that we don't get triggered back to our trauma to get into unnecessary ruts as we deserve to be happier every single day of our lives. ...
